#JukumuLetu, An Initiative to get Kenyans to read the constitution
It was a busy Saturday
afternoon for Nakuru residents this past weekend when #JukumuLetu initiative
was launched.
Good music from the Sarabi
band led by one talented vocalist, Nelson Mandela Akello, was really what you
could say refreshing while others were simply making noise and that is the real
truth.

Wait, there was this artist
from Makueni, he was not all swaggy but he was the real deal and he brought the
house down, ok he brought Nyayo Gardens down. The way he played that guitar was
fabulous and for once I danced to ukambani music thinking that Carlos Santana
was the guitarist.
Residents were informed on
how it was important for them to get to know what their constitution says since
ignorance is bliss for those in power. If they sleep on the job you cannot hold
them accountable without being knowledgeable.
Various issues affecting the
county were showcased through puppets for example the recent fighting among MCA’s
who were against Madam Speaker, Susan Kihika simply because she is a lady. People
got to learn that leadership is not about gender.
Then of course there were these
amazing dancers. Sky dancers from Nakuru Player’s theatre, their expressive
dance really sent messages, of course we laughed our socks off but truth is we
were being educated about our responsibility.
The downside is that the
event was supposed to start at 10 am but it started around 3 pm. We were told
that there were issues to do with power so a generator was brought. Then the
rain came and we had to go home.
For starters, it wasn’t bad
but next time, let time be observed and let people be informed. We requested
that they go to campuses and empower the youth with information because that
would be taking care of Kenya’s future.
Also it wouldn’t be bad if
they could apply what in communication is referred to as communication for
development. Before bringing in artists ensure they have an idea of what the
people of that area prefer or what their culture is. As much as the dancers did
well, there was too much of gyration of hips by a certain lady and many older
men and women were not comfortable with it. In terms of music, Mandela’s vocals
left us in awe and he had a message.
All in all let us read the
constitution before we open our mouths and start shouting or go into the
streets demonstrating Haki Yetu. Knowledge is power and if your leader knows
that you know, you can be damn sure that the line, they will toe. It is
#JukumuLetu so read the constitution.
Well if you missed out, here is what went down.
