Ethics in Journalism

I have just watched a certain channel in my country Kenya and I hate how one journalist conducted an interview. That is not my favourite channel simply because I think there is a certain level of professionalism lacking .                   Kenyan Honorable Member of Parliament/PHOTO/kenya-today.com Unless my professors are wrong but as a 3 rd year student of Communication  and Media, one thing is for certain and that is ethics. No matter how sweet the story is, I should not add my own ingredients or fuel the fire. There is supposed to be fair balance where both parties are heard equally. The problem with some Kenyan media houses is that they think journalism is about the face, the tweng and popularity. No, there is more to delivering news than good looks and slanted facts so as to attract ratings. Yes news should hit us with a bang. Yes us, the viewers not you the journalist. How I wished I was the one conducting that interv...

ABORT ME NOT

There are some rumours on the internet about a well-known gospel artist. The rumours claim that she has done an abortion after carrying a child in her for 7 months. Before going, oooooooooo, you better sit down and pause. Why did she do it, I mean why do women go about and ‘’flush’’ an innocent being? Well it is the looks, the stares and the gossips we have. The society looks down on any girl who gets pregnant out of wedlock and because the bar of morality is so high in those who are ‘’ perfect’’ poor girl regrets her night of illegal passion and instead of thinking of the life in her, she starts wondering how life will be around her so she gets rid of the foetus.                      Aborted lives/Photo courtesy of www.catholic-convert.com/ It takes two to tango and somebody recently looked at me with great amazement in his eyes. What did I say? I said that if it were not for condoms, most men have also committed abortion....

Devolving Education; A big no

We all love Kenya and we would rather do whatever we can to save her rather than see her suffer. Last week, a well-known politician suggested that we should have our education devolved. Now the next question is how would this work? If taxes are still paid to the national government does it mean we stop and start funding our schools? Look at what happened when education became free, it became a disaster. How can you mention devolvment when pupils are still sitting on the floor, walking for miles to get to school, have no laptops and their teachers are always going on strike? Girls are still lacking sanitary towels and boys are still fishing and herding cattle to get fees. Let us not forget the latest is public schools having their playgrounds being grabbed. Remember how one MP led in stoning land grabbers? Yes he too was passionate; you cannot take away our children’s right to play after taking away their right to learn well. Kenyan school children demonstrating against land grabbi...

REMEMBERING FIDEL CASTRO

Today we buried one amazing man. I had never met him in person but I had heard of him. During his funeral today, I saw senior government officials speak but I couldn't help but think about the widow. She is so young and he is gone. This people used her last minutes with him as a poilitical dias therefore I have written a poem trying to capture the true feelings of Lwam Bekele today. May God give her the grace to go through this. Photo courtesy of Standard Digital Edition, SDE.   THE SIGHS OF BEKELE          BY MERCY OPANDE Somehow  it felt like you were still around, Baby hasn’t noticed your absence, I was shocked to find myself laughing when people made jokes of how they interacted with you, I couldn’t help but feel like your towering figure was beside me, A son of the land, a father to my son, oh my man, During the day we were so many, right now they are all gone, And you are there all alone, The music, the noise, the sound, ...
