How to be a Great Virtual Assistant

A VA working, PHOTO/PSvirtual.com I am writing this article due to a friend who asked me for tips. So I thought why not share with everybody else? A virtual assistant commonly known as a VA provides all assistant services in an office but in this case they do it online. There is no huge difference between a secretary or personal assistant and a virtual assistant. The only difference is that the VA works in the virtual space while the rest do so in a physical space. Virtual assistants are limitless when it comes to the jobs they can do. No they cannot get you your morning coffee but they sure will let you go for an  early lunch since they will write, design, research, edit, transcribe, manage projects and even manage your social media page. All you need to do is just ask. How to become a VA If you are a beginner then you cannot start a website. All you need is experience. A VA must know a little bit of everything. Join an online workers forum or Faceboo...

Kenyans Committing Libel Unknowingly

Currently there are a lot of people who have and are being arrested for sharing things on social media and when they are arrested the first excuse they give is that the message did not originate from them. In media law there is a topic on defamation which covers both libel and slander. Many people are committing libel online unaware /PHOTO/juntariman.files.wordpress.com  Now one thing stands out very clearly and which most people do not know. Any person who spreads, shares a message or picture or caricature etc that makes the public question a person’s, reputation separately meets the requirements  of committing defamation and will be charged separately from the originator. There is a hashtag that is trending on Twitter today, Hastags are powerful but kindly only retweet or tweet when you know what you are doing. When someone shares a picture or statement or comment, please think before you regret. Anyone who shares, retweets, reposts, resnaps and all the sha...

Busy But not in Business; of young people who work on Facebook.

On Thursday I received a Facebook friend request from a guy named Steve M. I accepted the request. The next day he sent me a message that he has no job and has realized that for him to get one, he must have connections and he wants me to get him a job. First of all I was shocked at this negative attitude that the young man had. I have seen people selling sweets on the road to earn a living, I was once a maid when I was in high school trying to get money to go back to school, there are men who push heavy carts daily and do tiring construction work so just that they can take something home and there you are spending all the time in the world browsing and telling people to get you a job! Many people have lost jobs because of irresponsible use of social media/PHOTO/LAMEBOOK,THE GUARDIAN AND POPSUGAR.COM To me that young man insulted all that there is to respect about Labor Day. Why do some people think that others have it easy while they suffer? I told him that I worked ...

#JukumuLetu, An Initiative to get Kenyans to read the constitution

It was a busy Saturday afternoon for Nakuru residents this past weekend when #JukumuLetu initiative was launched. Good music from the Sarabi band led by one talented vocalist, Nelson Mandela Akello, was really what you could say refreshing while others were simply making noise and that is the real truth. JukumuLetu Launch in Makueni/PHOTO/CHARITY NZOMO Wait, there was this artist from Makueni, he was not all swaggy but he was the real deal and he brought the house down, ok he brought Nyayo Gardens down. The way he played that guitar was fabulous and for once I danced to ukambani music thinking that Carlos Santana was the guitarist. Residents were informed on how it was important for them to get to know what their constitution says since ignorance is bliss for those in power. If they sleep on the job you cannot hold them accountable without being knowledgeable. Various issues affecting the county were showcased through puppets for example the recent fighting among MCA’...

OH NEREA; ANOTHER ONE FROM SAUTI SOL

Well it is Friday and as Larry Madowo says, you know what it is. Well today he will be hosting one of the best bands in Kenya, Sauti Sol as they launch their new single, Nerea. Nerea is a song about a man pleading with his girlfriend not to abort his child and the song has raised a lot of concerns. Sauti Sol, Kenya's leading band/PHOTO/pbs.twimg.com Why would a girl want to abort? Well the answer is that obviously the man must have rejected the pregnancy and so she sees the only way out as abortion. Yes it’s true that children can grow up to amaze us but men need to stand up. Sauti Sol, Amos and Josh have really done a good job but they left the song hanging. Nerea does not want to abort; she wants someone to assure her that if she carries the pregnancy to term, then the man responsible must be ready to help her through the thick and thin. The man says bring my child, I will bring up the baby on my own. Truth is most men cannot without involving another woman w...

I am Happy Despite a B in KCSE

I was index number 2 in high school and I believed that I had what it takes to get an A. There was high expectation from teachers, friends and guardians to the point that when the results were released, they bought newspapers only to find my name missing. Then came the hour of reckoning when I called my school and was told I had a B-, at first I heard that I had a D- and really got a heart attack then the teacher sent a text to clarify everything. Success is not about grades/PHOTO/LIFTUPIDEAS Of course I was not happy with my grade but I was thankful. After staying 2 years before joining secondary school I finally did it. Getting a grade that was not my expectation wasn’t the end for me, I mean my life is still going well and I even have friends who got D’s and are doing better than me. I joined campus after 7 years and am completing my studies in December this year plus I got an internship at one of the leading media houses,(Standard Media Group) in the country and my...

How to Cope in a Difficult Environment

There is no such thing as utopia, this is the real world. God is good but the world ain’t fair. So you are in a difficult or unfriendly environment and you feel like you are going to throw in the towel the next day? Well sit tight and buckle up because I am going to share some practical things that have worked for me and I made it. 1.     Watch your tongue You came there and found them so they know better than you. This simply means that you keep out of the cheap politics. Simply agree to everyone who calls you aside but keep your comments to yourself. Judas was with Jesus even to the last meal and had to betray Him with a kiss simply because he looked like Him. The person to betray you looks just as you. 2.     Follow the rules Yes the rules give you a pain in the ass but who do you think is having it easy. Toe the line. It is better to be told that you are sucking up but truth is rules rule. Difficult situations can take a toll on anybod...

We Hunger for True Gospel Music

The kind of gospel music being played in Kenya today really worries me. Yesterday I had to listen to several songs to confirm that some of the gospel artistes do a remix of secular artistes. I do not think that this is brought about by lack of creativity but love of money. I usually look at Kari Jobe’s, Chris Tomlin’s, Newsboys, Lecrae’s and many other gospel artists’ concerts and one thing that stands out is that none of them takes away the glory that belongs to God. The hunger for God is real but be weary of the junk being served as gospel music/PHOTO/Courtesy Look at Kenya, we start well but before we know it, we want the good life and so instead of singing songs inspired by the Holy Spirit, we sing songs inspired by hunger, pride, greed, fame, the world’s way of thinking. At the end of the day its not Jesus who is Glorified but dancing styles, who shot your video and who produced the audio. Am not saying am any better because I love RnB and HipHop and Rock but when i...

REMEMBERING FIDEL CASTRO

Today we buried one amazing man. I had never met him in person but I had heard of him. During his funeral today, I saw senior government officials speak but I couldn't help but think about the widow. She is so young and he is gone. This people used her last minutes with him as a poilitical dias therefore I have written a poem trying to capture the true feelings of Lwam Bekele today. May God give her the grace to go through this. Photo courtesy of Standard Digital Edition, SDE.   THE SIGHS OF BEKELE          BY MERCY OPANDE Somehow  it felt like you were still around, Baby hasn’t noticed your absence, I was shocked to find myself laughing when people made jokes of how they interacted with you, I couldn’t help but feel like your towering figure was beside me, A son of the land, a father to my son, oh my man, During the day we were so many, right now they are all gone, And you are there all alone, The music, the noise, the sound, ...

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IN THE KENYAN GOSPEL SCENE

She is short and chubby but when she opens her mouth you will be surprised. Mercy Opande, a 3rd year student doing Communication and Media at Egerton University is taking the Kenyan airwaves by storm with her new single LOVE. Mercy’s sound is soft RnB and even though the song is long, you want to listen to it on and on. The song LOVE encourages Christians and Kenyans in general to love one another. Her opening statements are Jesus died for Jews, the kiuks and the Luos. Is this the only song she has done? No, Mercy is not new in the music scene. Remember the DJ Gylo, the guy who accused a pastor of stealing his wife? Mercy had done a collabo with him. She has also backed several artists including Bishop Joseph WW Kamau of Happy Church Ministries International. So this is Mercy’s first single. The song has received great reception when it was aired on One FM and Egerton Radio. She is working on her next song entitled Rejoice. Mercy’s strong vocals can only be compared to Cece Win...
